This is what people living in peace look like

The Mirror of Peace is a spatial work of art that invites the viewer to have his or her own personal experience with the theme of peace; it recalls the past, reflects the present and is an appeal to the future.

The Mirror of Peace is more than a work of art; it is an experience: the viewers see themselves in full life-size and read the text: “This is what people living in peace look like” and engage with this thought.

The work is interactive, invites self-reflection and makes the topic ‘peace’ accessible to a wide audience. Because you see yourself in the work, you know a part of the work and you immediately connect with it. This brings the topic very close and establishes a direct connection with your own life. The work sheds light on a difficult subject in an accessible and positive way. In addition, it is a communicative work of art: people who face each other in front of the mirror, can get into dialogue with each other, whether they know each other or not.

All these qualities make The Mirror of Peace accessible to a broad audience and connect the society in all its diversity, regardless of borders, gender, origin, religion, social backgrounds and age.

The Mirror of Peace makes it clear that living in peace is not something we can take for granted and that we must consciously do something to preserve it.

About the artist

Renee van Bavel

“Through my work for various memorial sites and foundations in Germany and the Netherlands, I have met many people for whom the words war and peace have a vivid meaning. These encounters have made me very aware that I live in peace and that this should not be taken for granted. This process has ignited a fire in me to share this “peace consciousness” with the public. Not by explaining it, but by creating a form that enables people to experience it for themselves. That is the Mirror of Peace”.
